Active multi-view object recognition: A unifying view on online feature selection and view planning

چکیده
Many robots are limited in their operating capabilities, both computational and energy-wise. A strong desire exists to keep computation cost and energy consumption to a minimum when executing tasks like object recognition with a mobile robot. Adaptive action selection is a paradigm, offering great flexibility in trading off the cost of acquiring information against making robust and reliable inference under uncertainty. In this paper, we study active multi-view object recognition and describe an information-theoretic framework that combines and unifies two common techniques: online feature selection for reducing computational costs and view planning for resolving ambiguities and occlusions. Our algorithm adaptively chooses between the two strategies of either selecting only the features that are most informative to the recognition, or moving to a new viewpoint that optimally reduces the expected uncertainty on the identity of the object. This two step process allows us to keep overall computation cost minimal but simultaneously increase recognition accuracy. Extensive empirical studies on a large RGB-D dataset, and with two different feature sets, have validated the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Our experiments show that dynamic feature selection alone reduces the computation time at runtime 2.5 to 6 times and, when combining it with viewpoint selection, we significantly ∗Corresponding author Email addresses: [email protected] (Christian Potthast), [email protected] (Andreas Breitenmoser), [email protected] (Fei Sha), [email protected] (Gaurav S. By establishing a link between active object recognition and change detection, we were further able to use our framework for the follow-up task of actively detecting object change. Furthermore, we have successfully demonstrated the framework’s applicability to a low-powered quadcopter platform with limited operating time.

متن کاملUnsupervised Distributed Feature Selection for Multi-view Object Recognition
Object recognition accuracy can be improved when information from multiple views is integrated, but information in each view can often be highly redundant. We consider the problem of distributed object recognition or indexing from multiple cameras, where the computational power available at each camera sensor is limited and communication between sensors is prohibitively expensive. In this scena...

To reveal and leverage the correlated and complemental information between different views, a great amount of multi-view learning algorithms have been proposed in recent years. However, unsupervised feature selection in multiview learning is still a challenge due to lack of data labels that could be utilized to select the discriminative features. Moreover, most of the traditional feature select...

Most object recognition systems use information from a single image of an object In many cases a single view may not contain su cient features to recognize the object unambiguously Hence more than one view is necessary With an active sensor the recognition process therefore involves identi cation of a view of an object and if nec essary planning the next view This paper presents a new on line r...
متن کاملA Solution to View Management to Build a Data Warehouse
Several techniques exist to select and materialize a proper set of data in a suitable structure that manage the queries submitted to the online analytical processing systems. These techniques are called view management techniques, which consist of three research areas: 1) view selection to materialize, 2) query processing and rewriting using the materialized views, and 3) maintaining materializ...
